United Airlines Launches Mobile Payment Tech

12/5/2014
A boarding pass has become the latest mobile payment option. OTG Management and United Airlines launched a program that allows customers to order food, beverages and other airport amenities and pay with MileagePlus award miles, using OTG’s iPad customer experience platform. The program begins today at select restaurants and will be expanded to nearly 6,000 iPads throughout Newark Liberty International’s Terminal C as part of a $120 million transformation of the United gateway.

Customers will be able to scan their boarding passes or enter their MileagePlus number on any of the almost 6,000 iPads that will be installed throughout the terminal’s restaurants, bars and gate areas. The iPads display the customer’s up-to-date flight information and offer dining or beverage options in up to 20 different languages, with the cost of items displayed in both dollars and miles, along with the customer’s MileagePlus balance.

At checkout, customers can choose to pay with award miles, offering a seamless experience for the savvy traveler. And with OTG’s 2U program, customers will even be able to order travel amenities delivered right to their seats — from neck pillows to ear buds — and pay with award miles.

The rollout is part of a $120 million renovation of Terminal C. In addition, 24 internationally and regionally acclaimed chefs — including four with Michelin stars — have been selected to create restaurant concepts and menus. Coupled with breathtaking designs by world-renowned design firms, these updates make the terminal itself a destination for travelers. The program is rolling out now in select restaurants at Terminal C and will be available throughout the terminal at completion of the redesign in 2016. At completion, Terminal C will have more iPads for customer use under one roof than any facility in the world.
