February POS Recap: Top Newsmakers in the Point of Sale

Tablet solutions and security, particularly EMV-certification, were making headlines in the point of sale landscape throughout the month of January. At the NRF BIG Show, many vendors announced the latest in mobile releases and rollouts, while payment security companies were sharing ways to prepare for the impending liability shift.  The top headlines during the month of February included: new point of sale offerings that integrate EMV payment processing (such as TouchSuite) and NFC capabilities (such as orderbird and ConCardis); Red Robin rolling out tablets to its nationwide locations; news of Heartland’s acquisition of Dinerware and pcAmerica, plus a report revealing that 75% of POS terminals in the U.S. feature NFC.  If you missed any of these stores – and more – check them out here in the February POS Recap.

POS Provider Offers Integrated EMV Payment Processing
As the country’s small business retailers prepare for the impending consumer fraud liability shift, technology and payment processing company TouchSuite has been hard at work developing the first-ever point of sale solution fully integrated with synchronized, commercially viable EMV processing capabilities- a solution the company today announced is now available on the U.S. merchant market exclusively through its Firefly system.

Increasing Profits and Reducing Theft with Biometric-Enabled POS
Hooters has 452 restaurants worldwide. With that many locations and thousands of employees, Hooters wanted to prevent theft, improve productivity and monitor time and attendance. Hooters needed a POS system that could help alleviate these issues. Several methods of employee authentication were considered to help manage these issues, including PINs and swipe cards. Biometrics eliminates loaning out your credentials to others and ensures only the authorized manager processes voids and refunds. Hooters found biometrics to be a viable option for several reasons. The Posiflex touch screen terminals that integrated both the MSR and DigitalPersona fingerprint reader were selected.

New Payment Technology Offers Solution for Cashless Payment or NFC
The iPad Point of Sale (POS) provider orderbird, together with it’s strategic payment partner ConCardis, introduces a solution for cashless payment with card or contactless via NFC (Near Field Communication) such as Apple Pay.

75 Percent of POS Terminals Shipped in North America Feature NFC
According to a new research report from Berg Insight, the market for NFC-ready POS terminals continued to show strong momentum in 2014 with annual shipments reaching an estimated 9.5 million units worldwide. The attach rate for NFC was highest in EU28+2 and North America, where 80 percent and 75 percent respectively of the POS terminals shipped featured NFC.

SpeedLine POS Adds Support for ConnectSmart Kitchen
Pizza and delivery restaurant point of sale developer SpeedLine Solutions Inc.  has announced a new integration with ConnectSmart Kitchen automation software from QSR Automations. With ConnectSmart Kitchen, restaurant operators gain new customization options to control the routing and display of every item and order on each kitchen display, highlighting item and order details with user-defined, colors, fonts, and formatting. It also adds support for graphical menu cards, and online video training.
 
Red Robin Gourmet Burgers to Roll Out Guest-Facing Tabletop Tablets
Red Robin Gourmet Burgers is set to bring Ziosk® tabletop tablets to Red Robin® restaurant locations across the United States. The rollout is expected to be implemented in late 2015. The Ziosk® is a 7-inch tablet that is designed to enhance the guest experience by giving Red Robin guests the ability to pay when they’re ready, order refills, play interactive games, enroll in the Red Robin Royalty loyalty program and redeem rewards.  The Ziosk tablet also allows guests to provide real-time feedback on their experience at the end of the meal.
 
Online Ordering Makes the Move to Mobile
The growth of online ordering in the restaurant industry is gaining traction as operators add the capability to remain competitive and meet customer expectations. Nearly one in four restaurants offer online ordering, according to HT’s 2014 Restaurant Technology Study. Their next horizon will be to take online ordering to a mobile platform via apps and websites.

NFC Tech Increases Server Efficiency
U.S. restaurants had sales of $709.2 billion last year and employ 10% of the country’s workforce, yet profit still averages around 3%.  The only way to truly increase profits is to sell more high-margin items such as drinks, and increase table turnover speed.
