10/10/2014
Interest in environmental sustainability continues to grow in the restaurant community, according to recent National Restaurant Association research. Restaurants are evaluating and participating in efforts to save resources as well as utility costs throughout the country. Recently honored for its three-year commitment to environmental sustainability, Corner Bakery Cafe was awarded the annual Environmental Sustainability Award for its commitment to energy efficiency. The award, presented by EnTouch Controls, is given to businesses that have made a significant positive impact on the environment.

As part of its strategy to reduce its environmental footprint, Corner Bakery Cafe has committed to implementing energy efficiency systems in all new corporate restaurants, as well as encouraging its network of franchise partners to implement the system in new cafes. With these environmentally conscious practices in place, the company has made the following impact:

Each energy-efficiency Corner Bakery Cafe uses, on average, 14.5% less energy and saves more than 52,000 kilowatt hours a year, equal to eliminating over 80,000 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle.

Each energy efficient Corner Bakery Cafe has also reduced its carbon footprint, on average, by more than 88,000 pounds of CO2 a year.

Corner Bakery Cafe projects its total electricity usage will be reduced by more than 8,000 megawatt hours each year, reducing its carbon footprint by nearly 7,000 tons of CO2 each year.

Corner Bakery Cafe was presented with the Environmental Sustainability Award at a ceremony that took place on Tuesday, September 16.
