November POS Recap: iPad rollouts and Security Dominate POS Headlines

Security was top-of-mind at the point-of-sale in November with two major hotel chains responding to POS breaches. Mobility also continued to drive POS upgrades with iPad rollouts at Cinnabon and Norwegian Cruiselines, plus Dunkin’ Donuts experimenting with on-the-go ordering that allows guests to order on their phones. MOBILE OPTIONS DRIVE POS UPGRADES
Dunkin' Donuts Tests On-the-Go Ordering and Delivery Service
Dunkin’ Donuts has announced two programs that will make it even easier and more convenient for people to run on Dunkin’ from morning to night. In Portland, Maine, members of the DD Perks® Rewards Program can get their favorite Dunkin’ Donuts menu items even faster when they download the new Dunkin’ Donuts On-the-Go Ordering app DD On-the-Go Ordering Portland, which enables guests to order in advance using their mobile phone, skip the line and go straight to pick up when they get inside the store. Guests can also pick up their mobile order at the drive-thru. Guests can place a mobile order up to 24 hours in advance, then simply confirm via the app when they are at the selected restaurant and ready to pick up their order.

Cruise Ship Takes Guest Engagement to Next Level with iPad Self-Ordering
Launching next month, Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship, Norwegian Escape, is leading the way for the ultimate guest experience at sea with branded dining experiences and technology that puts control at the guests’ fingertips. Norwegian Escape’s District Brew House and Food Republic restaurants will feature NorthStar Order Entry, an advanced cloud-based iPad point-of-sale system that allows guests the option of self-order and pace their meal and beverage service.

Cinnabon Rolls Out iPad POS
Cinnabon has selected Revel Systems as their Point of Sale strategic partner. Currently the POS is featured in 16 locations with plans to expand to 82 more franchise locations to help meet EMV standards within the United States. Cinnabon specifically chose Revel Systems' iPad POS for its enterprise performance, which includes the ability to offer guests the convenience and security of Apple Pay.
 
Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort Streamlines Dining and Retail Ops with POS
Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort, located on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, has selected the InfoGenesis® POS system from Agilysys to streamline dining and retail operations at the all-inclusive beach resort. InfoGenesis POS features real-time reporting, support for packages and prix fixe menus, and multi-language capabilities that drive service flexibility and increase operational efficiency.
 
Revention Releases Self Service Ordering Kiosk
Revention is pleased to announce the release of their Self Service Ordering Kiosk application.  The new application allows consumers to place their own order on a restaurant provided mobile device, keeping up with the current on-demand consumer culture.  Payments can be processed either on the Self Service Ordering application or on another workstation within the restaurant.

Hilton IDs and Takes Action to Eradicate Malware
Hilton Worldwide has identified and taken action to eradicate unauthorized malware that targeted payment card information in some point-of-sale systems.  Hilton immediately launched an investigation and has further strengthened its systems. 

Starwood Alerts Guests to Data Breach
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. announced today that the point of sale systems of a limited number of its hotels in North America were infected with malware, enabling unauthorized parties to access payment card data of some customers.

EMV Technology Conversion Reveals Challenges and Concerns for SMBs
One month following the Oct. 1 EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) liability shift for businesses, just 41 percent of small businesses have installed EMV chip-enabled payment terminals, according to new research from TD Bank. An additional 40 percent of small business owners (SBOs) say they plan to switch to the new technology soon, but indicated they have obstacles with or concerns about making the conversion. The remaining respondents said they either do not plan to install EMV (10 percent) or they are not aware of the new compliance rules regarding payment terminals (9 percent).
