New York City's The NoMaD Hotel to Seek LEED Silver Certification
New York City-based GFI Development Company announces that their luxury flagship hotel, The NoMad Hotel, will be the first New York City LEED-certified renovated hotel, slated to open in Fall 2009 in the NoMad District located in the Madison Square North Historic District. Standing for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design", a Green Building Rating System developed by the U.S. Green Council, LEED-certification is a check-list for eco-friendly design and practices, indicating environmentally sustainable construction divided into six basic categories: sustainable site, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation and design process.
Positioned on the historic block of Broadway at 28th Street in the NoMad District, GFI Development Company will be launching The NoMad Hotel in a renovated property, re-using an existing structure which was originally constructed in 1903, rather then creating a new build project. The twelve-story Kentucky limestone property will seek a LEED Silver Certification and will already include many eco-friendly elements in the original construction, including wooden window frames that are considered more environmentally responsible then aluminum materials, canopies located on the first three floors of the building that are ideal for shading sunlight and keeping the rooms cooler during the summer months, green bathroom and shower fixtures, and additional amenities made of recycled materials.
"We conceived The NoMad Hotel as an acclaimed international hotel operating ahead of the curve in the hospitality industry, incorporating luxury with responsibility," says Michael A. Rawson, president, GFI Hotel Company and NoMad Hotels. "The NoMad Hotel guest will benefit not only from the modern and sophisticated hotel amenities and services offered, but will also be experiencing an environmentally-conscious, sustainable luxury product. We believe that The NoMad Hotel is leading the way in what will be the next generation of hospitality in the United States."

Additionally, The NoMad Hotel will offer efficient, yet conservational technology throughout the hotel, incorporating environmentally-friendly in-room amenities including automatic shades that allow an abundance of natural light during the winter and shade during the summer, naturally regulating internal temperatures, high-efficiency bath environments, filtered water, a green' mode on heaters and air conditioning components, and additional energy-saving technologies including overall green' power sources throughout the building. Guests will also be able track the operating efficiency of the hotel on an energy monitoring graph found on an in-house television station.
The NoMad Hotel will feature 160 oversized guest rooms and 11 suites, decorated by internationally-acclaimed interior designer, Jacques Garcia, in a chic French Bohemian décor, and will be entirely non-smoking.
All cleaning products will be non-toxic and consist of only natural substances, and all hotel refuse and waste will be recycled.
The property will also boast a green' roof, consisting of an energy-absorbing indigenous garden, incorporating water-efficient landscaping, which includes drip irrigation, moisture sensors and light-deflecting pavement, and a historic copula.
