Carl's Jr. Launches First Sustainable Restaurant
CKE Restaurants Inc., owner of restaurant chains Hardee's and Carl's Jr. announces that it has opened its first "green" Carl's Jr.
The green Carl's Jr. restaurant is located in Carpinteria, Calif and the company indicates that it will function as a testing ground to evaluate energy conservation and energy-efficient operational efforts that may be applied more thoroughly throughout its stores. CKE has already replaced its incandescent lighting and installed compact fluorescent lamps in all of its company-owned stores to reduce electricity consumption.
Sustainable features the green Carl's Jr. will employ include an energy management system, Energy Star-rated equipment, solar reflective roofing material that reduces solar gain/heat absorption, a rainwater reuse system and a catalyst to convert charbroiler particulate into carbon dioxide and water, which reduces smoke, odors and emissions.
To further reduce the construction impact of the development, the green Carl's Jr. was developed on the site of a former restaurant.
CKE has implemented such companywide environmental initiatives as electronic waste recycling, the recycling and conversion of fryer oil into bio-fuel, and compact fluorescent lamp, or CFL, lighting replacement at all corporate-owned restaurants. The Company operates or franchises 1,912 Hardee's locations and 1,185 Carl's Jr. units worldwide.
