From Tech User to Tech Investor
Restaurant brands have been acquiring or becoming shareholders in the technology that powers their business.
Yum! Brands wrapped up the acquisition of Dragontail Systems earlier this month. The deal gives Yum! Brands the ability to scale Dagontail’s artificial intelligence (AI) kitchen order management and delivery technology globally. In March, Yum! made headlines when it acquired the artificial intelligence-based consumer insights and marketing performance analytics business of Kvantum Inc. Earlier this year Chipotle invested in Autonomous Delivery Company Nuro.
McDonald's once again was a tech leader. Back in 2019 the global QSR created McD Tech Labs, which was fueled by its acquisition of Apprente's voice ordering tech and Dynamic Yield’s machine learning technology
California Tacos CEO Robert Reynolds, said, OnPlate is a "new foundational piece of our digital strategy as we continue to execute on our overall growth initiatives. Additionally, we believe this will also be a big boost in value to our start engine raise as it expedites our digital market strategy for immediate market deployment.”
OnPlate will join the list of brands that California Tacos controls in the fast-casual, consumer packaged goods, and digital technology sectors.
