Palisade Launches iPad Wine List

11/8/2011
The process of selecting a fine wine just got whole lot simpler and greener for diners at Seattle’s Palisade Restaurant, a Restaurants Unlimited, Inc. (RUI) brand restaurant located in the Elliott Bay Marina.

Visitors can now experience the city’s first-ever paperless wine menu, designed to give users a constantly updated list of wines in inventory, complete with details on each bottle and special promotions.

The new technology, called SmartCellar by Incentient LLC, gives diners the ability to browse and make selections with an easy-to-use iPad, delivering every detail of Palisade’s award-winning wine list to their fingertips, while saving the restaurant time, money and paper.

According to Palisade General Manager Doug Zellers, the restaurant’s printed wine list included 35 pages of more than 600 wines by the glass, bottle and half bottle with information that constantly needed to be pulled and updated. “New things come in and prices change. With 25 wine lists and constant updates, we were using a lot of paper each week,” says Zellers. “Now, we’ll never have an outdated wine list. This dynamic, wireless technology helps us keep information fresh and avoid service interruptions.”

The restaurant’s Certified Sommelier, Yashar Shayan, chooses new wines, then researches and manages real-time updates to the bottle details via a dedicated WiFi network for the iPad wine list.

The touch pad database is searchable by every category imaginable. And, the database also includes earth-friendly categories for eco-conscious diners. “We are highlighting wines grown in sustainable, biodynamic, organic methods – qualities that are highly regarded by people in our community,” Shayan notes.

Future plans for the iPad wine list include pairing suggestions for select wines and entrÉes created by Chef Dan Gilmore.
